# Choose what each card shows

A card starts with the assignee and the tags. On a board that spans Claims
Platform and Core Insurance, the project each change request belongs to matters
more than either, and on a bug board priority does. Card fields are how you
decide.

## Before you start

A named board in the AnyKanban hub, with its work item type chosen on the
**General** tab: the list of addable fields comes from that type.

## Steps

1. Open the board and select **Settings**.
2. Open the **Fields** tab.
3. Pick a field from **Add field…**, and it joins the list as a new row. The demo
cross-project board shows Assigned To, Team Project and Tags; the bug board
shows Assigned To, Priority and Tags.
4. Drag a row to change the order, where the whole row is the handle rather than
only the grip, or remove one with its **Delete** button. From the keyboard: focus a
row, press Space to pick it up, move with the arrow keys, press Space to
   drop.
5. Tick or clear **Show work item ID on cards**, which is on by default.
6. Tick **Hide empty fields on cards** if fields without a value should be left
off cards entirely, then select **Save**.

## What you should see

Each card reads top to bottom: the type icon, the ID when you left it on, and
the title; then the state row; then your fields, in your order. Each field row
is labeled with the field's display name, except Assigned To, which shows
initials and the name without a label. Tags render as pills rather than text,
and dates are formatted for your locale.

A field with no value reads `—`, except Assigned To, which reads *Unassigned*.
With **Hide empty fields on cards** on, those rows are simply absent.

## Notes

ID, Title, State and Work Item Type are never field rows and are not offered in
**Add field…**: the title is always shown, the ID has its own checkbox and the
state has its own row. Card fields are also the fields you can edit by
clicking on the card, so hiding empty fields removes that shortcut for
exactly the fields most likely to need filling. Tags are the one exception:
they render as pills and have no inline editor.
