# Silence a notice you have already answered

Some of the yellow cards above a board describe something that is never going
to change. A cross-project board will always reach items you are not allowed to
read, and it will say so every time you open it. A type without the order field
will not grow one because you looked at the board again on Tuesday.

You can close such a card, and it comes back tomorrow. That is on purpose: a
close means "not now". When you have read the sentence, understood it and
decided there is nothing to do, you want the other answer. That is **Don't show
again on this board**, and it lasts.

It is yours, and it is that board's. Nobody else who opens the board loses the
notice, and the same notice on a different board is a different question, so
you are asked it again there.

## Steps

1. Read the notice above the board.
2. Select **Don't show again on this board** on the card. It sits next to the
   close button.
3. The card goes, and a short message tells you where it went.
4. To bring it back, open the board's **More actions** menu and select **Show
again**, followed by the name of the notice. It returns at once. There is no
Save, because this was never part of the board's settings.

## What you should see

The notice disappears and stays gone. Close the tab, come back next week, open
the board from a different machine: it is still gone, because the answer is
stored in your own Azure DevOps against your account and that board.

A **Show again** entry appears in the **More actions** menu for each notice you
have hidden on that board, and for none if you have hidden nothing. Each one
carries a short name, since the notices themselves are paragraphs. Bring back
the last one and the entries are gone again.

Hiding a notice never hides anything else. The cards, the counts and the
columns are untouched, and a count that was marked `+` because something could
not be read is still marked `+`. You have silenced the sentence about the
shortfall, not the shortfall.

## Notes

Not every notice offers the choice, and the ones that do not are the point of
the feature rather than a gap in it.

A notice that says the board has **stopped being current** can never be
silenced: the refresh that failed, the connection that is being re-established,
the counts frozen at their last good values. A board quietly sitting under a
hidden notice of that kind would be showing numbers that are no longer true
with nothing on screen to say so, which is the one thing this product will not
do. Those cards still have their close button. Closing one hides it for as long
as that failure continues. Once a refresh succeeds, the close is forgotten, so
the next failure shows the card again, and so does opening the board again.

The warning about writing the backlog's order is not dismissible at all, by
either gesture. It is addressed to the people who did not turn that option on.

A hidden notice is never brought back for you. If the condition clears and
returns later, the notice stays hidden, because you already answered it.
Restoring it is something you do, from the menu.

The choice is not offered on a board with no saved query behind it, which is
the **Board** tab reached from a query you have never saved. There is nothing
lasting to file the answer against. Some of those boards share one answer
between them, so hiding a notice on one would hide it on the next one you open.
The others are given a fresh identity every time the query is run, so the
answer would be lost the moment you left the page and nothing in the menu could
bring the notice back.

The same tab on a **saved** query does offer it. That surface has no settings
panel at all, which is why the way back is the **More actions** menu rather
than a setting.
