Give a board a link you can put in a wiki page
The change-request board spans Claims Platform, Core Insurance and Digital Banking, and most of the people who follow that program never open the Boards hub. Copy the board's link once and paste it into the wiki page, the status mail or a browser bookmark, and it opens that board directly instead of landing on the board list.
Before you start
A named board in the hub, or simply a saved query. A named board's link carries
?board=<board id>; a query's board can be linked without any board
definition, with ?query=<query id> on the same hub address, and Copy link
on that surface produces exactly that form. When a query link has earned a
board of its own, Save as board in that surface's More actions menu
turns it into a named one, and the link becomes the ?board= form.
A ?board= link opens the board for other people only when the board is in
Project boards or filed under a team. A board in My boards is stored
for you alone, so for anyone else its link works like a link to a deleted
board (see Notes). If
others will use the link, move the board first: select Move to… beside it
in the board list and choose Project board list or a team's group. Even
then the link opens the board only for people it is listed for: a board that
reads a team for people who may read work items in one of that team's area
paths, any other project board for people who may read work items at the
project's root, and every board for the person who created it. Anyone else
who opens the link reads This board does not exist, or you don't have
permission to read the work it shows. See
who sees which boards.
⚠️ Do not bookmark the ad-hoc Board tab's own browser address (the one
containing /_queries/...). That URL belongs to Azure DevOps, and opened
directly it shows the tab without loading the board, so reach that tab by
clicking from query results, and use the hub links above for anything you keep.
Steps
- Open AnyKanban under Boards and select the board.
- In the board's header command bar, select ⋯ (More actions), then Copy link.
- Check that the toast reads Board link copied to the clipboard.
- Paste the link where people will find it: the wiki page, the mail, the bookmark.
- Open the pasted link in a new tab to confirm what your readers will get.
What you should see
The link is the hub's own address with ?board=<board id> appended. Opening it
puts you on that board, its header, its columns and its cards, with no stop at
the board list, and it does so even if you had a different board open before:
an explicit link always wins over the board the hub remembers for you.
Notes
The address bar carries the board while you work, because opening a board sets
?board=… and closing it clears the value again, so a bookmark taken on an
open board opens the same board as the link Copy link produces. AnyKanban
works out the link when the hub opens and copies it during your click, because
inside Azure DevOps it runs in a frame, where a browser may allow a copy only
then. If
Azure DevOps cannot give the hub's address, or the browser still refuses the
copy, the toast instead reads The board link could not be copied. Copy the
URL from the browser's address bar. A link that no longer matches a board
here, for example because the board was deleted or sits in someone else's
My boards, never opens another board in its place. It gets the sentence a
board outside your list gets, This board does not exist, or you don't have
permission to read the work it shows., with Open the board list beneath
it. Both wait for the same answers from Azure DevOps before they say it, so
nobody can tell from the answer, or from how long it took, which of the two
it was. Only in a project with no boards at all does the hub open as it does
for a first visit, on the suggestions for a first board, with the notice
That link did not match any board here.
