Move between boards without going back to the list

A process owner who keeps one board for business requests and another for change requests moves between them a dozen times a day. The board name in the header is the switch: select it and pick the other board, without a detour via the board list.

Before you start

At least two boards in your list, counting the shared boards listed for you (filed under the project or under a team, see who sees which boards) and your own My boards. With a single board the header title is plain text, because there is nothing to switch to, and no chevron appears.

Steps

  1. Open AnyKanban under Boards and open either board.
  2. Select the board name in the header, where it carries a chevron. Enter or Space opens the menu when the name has focus.
  3. Choose the board you want. The board you are already on is in the list too, but its entry is disabled.
  4. To reach the full list instead of another board, select Back in the command bar.

What you should see

The header title becomes the board you picked, and the columns are rebuilt from that board's own work item type. Switch from the business-request board (New, Triage, In Progress, In Review, Done) to the support-request board in the same project, and a Waiting on customer column appears between In Progress and In Review. The address bar's ?board= value follows the switch, so the link in your address bar is always the board on screen.

Notes

Switching back to a board you had open earlier in the same tab shows its cards at once, as they were the last time it loaded, with Refreshing at the right of the tab row while the board reads them again. The new cards replace them in one step, and until then nothing on the board can be dragged or edited. A board you open for the first time in the tab waits for its own cards, and so does one whose level or team has changed since. AnyKanban remembers the last four boards this way, in the tab's memory only: nothing is written anywhere, and closing or reloading the tab forgets them.

The menu lists the shared boards in your list, sorted by name, then your own My boards, sorted by name. It includes boards you have never opened. It holds exactly what the board list holds for you, so a colleague's My boards are not in it, and neither is a shared board that is not listed for you, such as another team's board when you may read only your own team's area path. It closes again on Escape or Tab, both of which hand focus back to the switcher, or on a click outside it; the arrows and Home/End walk the list. Switching also updates what the hub reopens next time: that memory is per user, so two people working in the same project can each land on their own board. If you would rather not depend on the memory, since a morning spent in a colleague's board moves it, mark one board as your default instead, and switching stops changing where you arrive.
